Leaky Wastewater Pipes Discharge Drugs

posted in: News | 0

In a recent study funded by the National Science Foundation, researchers were able to isolate human doses of pharmaceuticals in the wastewater stream attributed to leaky pipes alone and estimate annual loads of pollution in the Chesapeake Bay. The data was drawn from a waterway flowing through Baltimore County into Baltimore City. The specific findings may not be applicable to the Corsica watershed, but the relationship between human doses of pharmaceuticals, leaking pipes, and the resulting polluting affect on waterbodies and habitats is worth paying attention to.
