Public Hearing on Tree Protection

A citizen-sponsored text amendment to the County’s Planning and Zoning Code seeks to repeal Woodlands from the Natural Resource Protection section. Doing so is not in conformance with the County’s recently adopted Comprehensive Plan and would allow more tree removal in environmentally sensitive areas. Trees are one of the most cost effective ways to deal with increasing environmental hazards and contribute to human health and habitat for birds and other wildlife. The County’s Planning Department staff did not recommend passage of the amendment but the Planning Commission voted to recommend passage to the County Commissioners. Citizen-sponsored amendments are required to have a public hearing. The hearing is scheduled for 6 pm at the Liberty Building in Centreville before the Commissioners vote, currently scheduled for August 23rd.
